Helen smiled to herself. He would be so happy when she suddenly appeared at the apartment door.

Helen smiled to herself. He would be so happy when she suddenly appeared at the apartment door. For greater effect, she decided she needed to prepare properly. On the way, she stopped at a store and bought beautiful new lingerie.

She sighed and went back to scrubbing the tiles. There was still so much work to do, and she couldn’t afford to waste time.

When her vacation ended, she wouldn’t have any free time left. So she had to get everything done this week.

Helen worked diligently for a few minutes, then got out of breath again. She straightened up with displeasure, sat down on a chair, and took off her gloves. Running her hands through her messy hair, she wiped the sweat from her forehead and looked around.

This apartment still needed a lot of investment, but it was already much better than when she bought it. She had done a great deal of work. Almost all her savings had gone into this place.

That’s why she had to do the cleaning herself. There was some money left for renovations, but it still wasn’t enough. Helen took a sip of water straight from the bottle standing on the small table.

Memories of the events that had changed her life in an instant flooded her mind again. Helen sank into recollection. The day before, she had been sent on a three-day business trip.

She and Steven had left their daughter with her grandmother and were planning a romantic weekend. Then this sudden business trip came up.

Helen couldn’t refuse — it was an important step for her career. She left, and her husband said he would miss her terribly.

To her surprise, Helen finished all her tasks quickly and shortened the trip by one day. She decided not to tell Steven and surprise him instead.

He would be so thrilled when she suddenly appeared at the apartment door. For greater effect, she decided to prepare properly and bought beautiful new lingerie at the store. After the plane landed, she went to her best friend’s place to change.

She didn’t call Caroline beforehand because her friend was always home in the evenings. Besides, they had been texting just a few hours earlier, and Caroline had said she definitely wasn’t going anywhere that day.

Helen wouldn’t be a bother, and her friend always supported her. Maybe Caroline would do her hair and a nice makeup — she was a real professional at that.

Helen also decided to borrow Caroline’s red high-heeled shoes, the ones she had worn on her birthday. They would go perfectly with the new black lingerie that was now in Helen’s bag.

Anticipating the meeting with her husband, Helen hummed a romantic melody she had heard on the plane. When the taxi pulled up to Caroline’s building, she quickly went upstairs and rang the doorbell.

There were a few seconds of silence, then footsteps. The lock clicked and the door opened. Helen opened her mouth to ask her friend for help right from the threshold, but no words came out.

What she saw shocked her so much that she lost the power of speech.

A man was standing in front of her. And not just any man — her own husband. Steven was wearing only sports pants and men’s house slippers.

The sports pants were unfamiliar to Helen. Steven didn’t have anything like that at home. She stared at him with her mouth open, trying to understand what was happening.

Steven looked at her with frightened eyes, his mouth closed. Helen finally managed to close her mouth and said:

“What’s going on?”

He just blinked rapidly, trying to process the situation.

Helen still couldn’t understand why her husband was in her best friend’s apartment. At that moment, Caroline appeared in the hallway.

“What, did they deliver it already? So fast? They usually don’t come this early. Did you pay them, darling?”

Then Caroline saw Helen. She instantly fell silent and covered her mouth with both hands. Her brightly painted eyes widened.

She was wearing a beautiful lace robe and the very same red high-heeled shoes that Helen had wanted to borrow. As soon as Helen heard the word “darling,” she understood everything.

God, what a fool she had been. How had she not realized the situation immediately? It was a double betrayal — her husband and her best friend! Perfect!

Helen didn’t know what women usually did in such situations when catching their husbands, so she simply asked:

“How long has this been going on?”

Caroline quickly recovered:

“Oh, Helen, you’ve probably misunderstood. My bathroom tap broke, I didn’t know what to do or who to call. So I phoned Steven and he came to help me.”

Helen looked her up and down mockingly:

“Right! And you greet him dressed like that? I suppose it helps him with the difficult repair work, doesn’t it?”

Caroline automatically pulled her robe tighter. Helen looked at her husband and continued:

“I see you prepared responsibly for his visit. You even bought him sports pants and slippers. You must have a really serious problem with that tap? You probably planned to fix it all night, since he changed into home clothes?” she said, turning to her husband.

Steven finally came to his senses and sighed deeply. He understood that a scene was inevitable.

“Helen, let’s calm down and talk like adults.”

That was when Helen exploded:

“What is there to talk about? You two were scheming behind my back, and I had no idea. I’m just curious — how long have you both been making a fool of me? And how much longer would it have lasted if I hadn’t shown up today? You listened to me when I told you about my problems, and then ran straight to my husband to tell him everything? And you laughed at me while spending time together?” she said, turning to her friend.

Caroline stayed silent, looking down and feeling uncomfortable in the high heels in front of Helen. Helen felt she was about to cry from hurt. She turned to leave, then remembered something.

She stopped, rummaged in her bag, pulled out the package with her recent purchase, and threw it at her former friend. The bag opened and the contents spilled out at Caroline’s feet.

“Enjoy! Trust me, he’ll like it! I know his taste, and it’s more expensive than you are.”

The next day, Helen filed for divorce. Steven got down on his knees, begging her to forgive him. He said it was a moment of weakness, swore his love, but it all felt so humiliating to her.

She told him she was moving with their daughter to her mother’s if he didn’t leave the apartment until all formalities were completed. He packed some things and went to stay with a friend.

Later they sold the apartment, and most of the money went to Helen because she needed to buy a new home for herself and her daughter.

Katie was only seven years old, but she handled the family breakup with remarkable strength.

With the money from the sale of their old home, Helen bought this apartment. It wasn’t new and needed repairs, but it was the best option she could find. They had moved in with all their things just last week.

Now she needed to get it in order to plan her next steps. She had taken vacation time especially for this.

Helen finished the water and set the bottle on the floor. Yes, there was still so much work ahead.

But at least she had started a new life. Of course, she suffered knowing her family had been destroyed in an instant — this was not what she had expected at all.

She had loved her husband, but he had trampled on their relationship and their ten-year marriage. For ten whole years they had lived in perfect harmony.

What had happened that made him decide to cheat? Why had she married him? Now it was clear that nothing good had come from their marriage.

“Mommy, I finished over there. Can you give me another cloth? I want to wipe the windowsill in the kitchen,” her daughter Katie said, walking into the kitchen.

A smile lit up Helen’s face too. She looked at her daughter with tenderness. How could she have thought that nothing good had come from it?

Here she was — this smart and perceptive girl. She was the best thing that had happened to her in all those years. From that marriage, she had this incredible daughter, who was now bravely enduring all the hardships of their separation.

Katie had never once blamed her parents. She had never gotten involved in their arguments or cried. It was clear she was hurting deeply, but she never complained to her mother that she was scared.

Helen reached out and pulled her daughter close:

“Do you know how much I love you? I don’t say it often lately, but you know it, right?”

Katie smiled and snuggled into her mom. She didn’t say anything, just nodded, but Helen felt that nod.

Tears welled up in her eyes. She hugged her child even tighter — the child who couldn’t yet put all her feelings and worries into words.

“I’m sorry that your dad and I disappointed you, but that’s how it turned out. I can’t explain everything to you right now, but when you grow up, you’ll understand. I’ll tell you the truth later, but I can’t right now. I’m sorry — I don’t even know how to explain it to you.”

When Katie heard these words from her mother for the first time, she stirred. She turned to Helen and looked straight into her eyes with a serious gaze:

“I understand everything, Mom. You don’t need to explain anything because I already understand. My friend Olivia’s parents got divorced last year. Her dad left for another woman, that’s why they separated. Her mom cried a lot and was very upset. Olivia said her mom often yelled at her for no reason, and Olivia even wanted to run away from home, but she had no money.”

“I promised I wouldn’t tell anyone, but you’re my mom, so I can tell you, right? You won’t tell anyone this secret?”

“I saw how upset you were, so I know Dad is the reason we’re no longer a family. But I don’t blame you or him. I love you both so much that I don’t want to blame anyone. I’m scared, but I’ll try not to upset you with my behavior.”

Helen felt tears streaming down her cheeks. They were tears of both happiness and regret at the same time.

She regretted that her daughter had to go through such a trial, but that was life. And Helen was grateful to have such support in the form of her seven-year-old daughter, who turned out to be wise beyond her years.

She cupped her daughter’s face in her hands and said:

“You know who you are? You’re my little psychologist. You’re the best thing I have. I’m grateful to your father for giving me you. I don’t regret for a single second that I married him. You are my joy and my happiness. And thank you for being here with me.”

Katie gave a surprised childish snort, shaking her pigtails. Though it didn’t quite match her wise words:

“Mommy, we’re girls and we have to support each other, right?”

Helen laughed through her tears at such a statement. So small, yet having such grown-up conversations. Maybe she had simply been forced to grow up too soon? In any case, Helen was not alone — she had her best little friend, who would never betray her.

She hugged Katie, then wiped the tears from her face and said:

“Alright, enough crying and relaxing. Let’s have a snack because we still have so much work to do. We can’t stop now.”

Katie smiled joyfully:

“Can I run down to the store for cheese buns?”

“Of course you can. The money is on the shelf in the hallway — take it.”

Katie quickly put on her sandals and left the apartment. Helen watched from the window as her daughter walked briskly, looking around. Such a funny little girl, just like she herself once was.

Helen smiled and felt that everything would be alright for them. It simply couldn’t be any other way.

Helen stood in the middle of the almost empty kitchen, which still smelled of fresh paint and cleaning products, and watched as Katie disappeared through the entrance door. Outside the window, the wet roofs of London glistened under the autumn light, which lay upon them like a thin veil of calm.

This apartment wasn’t yet a home. But it already held something else — a silence that no longer hurt.

She ran her hand along the countertop. Once this had felt like the end of the world: betrayal, collapse, nights of tears, fear of the future. Now it was simply… the past. Like an old photograph that had yellowed a little but no longer cut the heart.

Her phone quietly vibrated in her pocket. A message from Steven. No extra words. Just one: “How are you?”

Helen stared at the screen for a long time. Then she simply turned off the sound and placed the phone face down.

Not out of anger. Not out of hurt. But because for the first time in a long while, she didn’t want to return to the place where she had been broken.

Katie returned from the hallway — cheeks red from the cold, holding a bag with warm buns. She put it on the table and, without fully taking off her jacket, hugged her mom as if afraid she might disappear again.

And in that moment, Helen understood a simple truth:

Life doesn’t take everything away at once. It simply teaches us to stand on our own — and not to fall.

She smiled and stroked her daughter’s hair.

“Well, shall we start building our new home?”

Katie nodded without lifting her face from her mother’s shoulder.

And for the first time, those words sounded not like a renovation plan, but like a promise for life.
